Microsoft Office95 used to support the HPGL graphic file format. This format is used in Engineering labs to obtain read-outs from instruments. According to their article at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q159/2/82.asp Office97 does not come with that file format support.

Below are the instructions for restoring the functionality to insert HPGL format graphics into Office97 applications (at least into Word 8.0, which is the only one that I've tested so far). I have successfully tested this on both a Windows95 PC and a WindowsNT PC.

In order for Word97 to be able to import HPGL format files, follow these instructions (NOTE -- you may want to print them first):

1.	Save the attached files to your desktop.
2.	Close all open programs.
3.	Run the hpgl.exe file first (by double-clicking on it).
4.	Click Unzip when asked.
5.	Click OK when it says the files were unzipped successfully.
6.	Now run the hpgl.bat file (again, by double-clicking on it).
7.	Click OK when it says the information was successfully entered into the registry (it will say this TWICE).
8.	You may now safely delete both the hpgl.exe and the hpgl.bat files from your desktop.
9.	That's it! You're done. You may now re-open Word and try to insert the picture as before.
